MrEnt is a program for drawing high-quality, printable phylogenetic trees. It is a user-friendly software that recognizes Nexus tree files (like those generated by e.g. PAUP and MrBayes) and displays them in the most commonly used tree formats. Our goal was to produce a software to create with no troubles all tree drawings for scientific publications directly from the analysis outputs, without using any additional graphic editor.
MrEnt version 2.4 maintains the same general structure of previous versions, but we introduced several new functions that greatly expand the software potentiality. The major differences are:
use of layers, following the same principle as in e.g. Photoshop or Illustrator;
display multiple trees within the same figure;
embedding images within the figures;
automatic calibration of chronograms with error bars, including the BEAST annotated tree files.
Although most functions are intuitive, for more advance features and options you are strongly encouraged to read the manual!
System requirements and software installation
The software runs only under Windows. It has been tested with Windows XP and Windows Vista, but presumably it should work also with Windows 2000 and Windows 7. Please report any problem with other Windows versions.
The software requires the .NET Framework version 2 or higher. If your computer is rather new, it should be pre-installed. Otherwise you can download and install the .NET Framework 4 from this link (it's free!). Please note that the .NET Framework needs up to 500 MB of free disk space!
Then unzip the MrEnt2.4.zip file in your preferred folder. No further installation is required.
